Concert Summary

This Sunday afternoon Jefferson Airplane set, sandwiched between sets by the Grateful Dead and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, concluded a memorable three-day run at Fillmore Auditorium. At this point in time, Spencer Dryden had recently replaced original drummer Skip Spence, who had moved on to found Moby Grape. Original female vocalist, Signe Anderson, was still on board, soon to be replaced by Grace Slick.

The group was clearly forging ahead into new territory, beginning to leave most of their folk roots behind. Dryden and Casady were beginning to develop into one of the most…entire summary

Cream is not to be compared with the Airplane, I like them both for different reasons and obviously Cream is heavier but Airplane is like trance music. When they go from mellow to a soaring guitar solo it's "intoxicating" to quote Jimmy Page referring to his own music, like Let Me In for example and especially their version of Fat Angel. Zeppelin always does songs that go soft to hard Stairway, Ramble On, What is and What Should Never Be are great examples. Airplane does this very often, obviously not as heavy. Cream comes from their blues, rock, jazz and psychedelic influence. Airplane comes more from folk jazz then blues and rock mixed with the psychedelic/sitar,ravi shankar influence. Overall Cream is more of a traditional rock band and Airplane is a very unique mix of musicians and genres.

For some reason, this is currently the highest-ranking JA concert on WV. While it's historically interesting, no way it's the best.

Marty invented the Airplane. What have you done?

Yeah Marty never did anything of note, ever. Marty never wrote a hit song called "Miracles." Nope it's just a rumor. Nothing to see here. As for the Airplane, I think "You Wear Your Dress Too Short" was a great Marty song from 1970 that fit the style of the band well.

I always thought Marty was undisciplined. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes he jazzed things up too much. I think it was bad timing more than anything else; his vocal style in concert fit the band much better in their earlier days. His studio work was outstanding, but I think he remained primarily an early 60's pop singer at heart - in a band known for exploring new forms of music.

As usual it's Casady carrying the band.

Ampzilla's comment just goes to show that everything is a matter of opinion. Plenty of folks think Marty was a great vocalist. Who are you, a college music major? You have the elitist attitude of one. What I love about Rock music is its *seperation* from that attitude. Ego is a part of talent. It's actually a huge component... you have to have an ego in the first place to pursue a place in the world of art where there's not only so much competition but also the role of being an outsider or rebel or whatever, standing outside of most people's little comfort zone world. Anyway, I doubt very many people will agree with the assertion that Marty doesn't have any "command" in his vocals. Gimme a break. An opinion is one thing, but that's just wrong.

Marty Balin as a vocalist and personality was always 2nd to 3rd rate in the US at the time ....at best. In retrospect he accomplished nothing of note other than getting a "mention" by getting knocked out by the Angels in the "Gimme Shelter" movie. His competition at the time included Winwood, Stewart and others... even Butterfield who did not consider himself (and he was not)a vocalist, had more vocal command let alone communication than Marty ever did. Marty was great at ego. That's why Airplane jettisoned him. They were right...if you were back in the day.

Awesome concert, and Marty does sound great. Then again, I was at many Airplane concerts back in the day and he always sounded great :)
