Concert Summary

Following a well-attended Friday and Saturday night run at Fillmore Auditorium, where the Jefferson Airplane performed on a bill with the James Cotton Blues Band and Moby Grape, a Sunday afternoon matinee show was added, where the Airplane could play again before an all-ages audience. This performance is interesting for a number of reasons. It captures the band just days after they had recorded the bulk of the material destined for their classic Surrealistic Pillow album. Not only does it feature this fresh new material at the point it was being recorded, but this particular…entire summary

To hear these concerts has tremendous meaning for me. I saw the Airplance 21 times in NYC (mostly the Fillmore East, but also at the Bandshell in Central Park and at Woodstock.) To hear them now is to know how right I was then. My spirit soars to hear these concerts here. Outstanding notes on each of the concerts by the way-- clearly written by someone who knows the band and its musice.

These guys (and girl) are something else...really. I think the recordings of "White Rabbit" and "In the Morning" really encompass the musical versatility of this group. I am particularly a fan of their version of "My Grandfather's Clock" here (otherwise listed as "Instrumental".) I think the chromatic descent of what sounds either like Paul's Rickenbacker or Grace's organ is complimentary enough to send this traditional classic on a trip right to space. And Jack's bass solo is just phenomenal. Have a listen! My favourite from this set and perhaps from all sets is their rip on Fred Neil's "Other Side of this Life" If anyone hasn't heard their version from the Monterey Pop festival, check it out. I know you can download the show off of Amazon. It is perhaps one of the more intense, progressive jams of the 1960s I have ever heard.

The Airplane is in a class by itself. Without a doubt the best, most talented band to come out of SF in the sixties. They are the (Acapulco) gold standard. Saw them live in Cleveland in 1970 and will never forget it. No other band can encapsulate a zeitgeist, a moment in time as perfectly as they can. Can't thank Wolfgang's Vault enough for preserving and making available such priceless concerts.

Absolutely the best band to come out of the San Fran scene in the late 60s....better than the Dead and better than Quicksilver. The talent in this band was awesome. Jorma and Jack, Paul and Spencer (later Joey Covington) were magic together. Vocally they had no equal. Not just with Marty and Grace. The entire band could sing and often they did in harmonies or by themselves. I saw them live several times and they were LOUD!!! The NY Times did a Sunday Magazine article on the band and Grace was quited as saying the goal at each concert was to play louder....I don't think that their records ever came close to the energy they exuded in a live performance. Seeing them with or without drugs was truly a psychedelic experience.
