Concert Summary

This set ended the final show of a three-day run featuring Jefferson Airplane opening and closing shows, with sets by blues legends John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Reed in between. After two wild nights at Winterland, the run ended with a much smaller Fillmore Auditorium performance on Sunday afternoon.

Immediately apparent here is that the Jefferson Airplane had progressed remarkably over the course of a few months. Their sound was evolving and becoming more distinctive. They sound much less like the folk-pop oriented band of 1966 and are becoming more aggressive. They had completed…entire summary

What a fun set of music, here. The opening number, "Other Side," is a particular favorite of mine, especially in the context of 1967. A fantastic version of this can be heard on the Monterey Pop disc. As a side note, it wasn't necessarily "uncharacteristic" for Grace to hit the keys during shows. She had played the piano/organ for The Great Society and a lot of her piano work can be best heard on "After Bathing at Baxter's," the album for which she scored a few pieces.

The version of 'Other Side Of This Life' here is one of the best takes I've yet to hear. It's also interesting to hear a set that doesn't include either of their top-40 hits. Having picked up the beautiful Wes Wilson poster for this show from the Vault store a few years back, it's such an added bonus to be able to hear the actual sets from the entire run. These March '67 shows, coupled with the October '69 shows you've recently added, have to be some of the best Airplane live recordings around. Thanks again for bringing one of the best bands of the '60s back to life.
