Concert Summary

The second of two shows recorded at the famed Tower Theater in Philly for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, this lively set features Ponty and his terrific band when his commercial success was at its peak. Opening with "Aurora" and working his way through such compositions as "Cosmic Messenger," "The Art Of Happiness," "The Struggle Of The Turtle To The Sea," and a twenty minute-plus medley of "Ethereal Mood/Wondering On The Milky Way/Egocentric," Ponty and his band show why they could transcend so many different styles of music and keep it all tied to a progressive jazz-rock fusion base. I saw Jean-Luc at the Tower in 1985 and to this day rank that show as one of my all time favorite concerts seen. This '78 is amazing. Classic Jean-Luc.

I worked security for a JLP show in 1981 in Rochester, NY, and this definately takes me back. Great sound, great band, great music! Another phenominal Zappa alumnus!

I'm blown away at their passion not just their prowess ... so much more character than many of the other fusion players of the time .. like Bruford, Mouson, Dregs ... I like PFM for this kind of passionate energy, tho'. I guess the rythym section really gets me 1st being a percussionist, but the keyboards and string players rock as well - and what can you say about Armstrong! And Ponty ... well nuff said. What is his best live album, iyo? There is one from this period with this band I was looking at on Amazon ... Peace out RDS

Ponty kind of sounds like Lawrence Welk when he speaks! Not a knock...just an observation. Give it up for Scheurell and Armstrong!

The live concert performances do JLP much more justice than the records/cds. I prefer his playing with Zappa but his own band was pretty good.

I saw JLP on this tour in Oakland, absolutely amazing show. Thanks Wolfgang's Vault for taking me back. I'd love to buy this one!

They were so good that the crowd at the Tower called them back for a second encore. This is one kick-a** concert!!! I've never heard a band more "on" than this one there and then. Defintely worth a listen!
