Concert Summary

One of two shows recorded on this night at the legendary Tower Theater in Philly for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, this performance features Ponty at his most commercially viable. Although the jazz-fusion world that had been successfully developed by Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever was starting to wane, Ponty was able to keep the crowds coming for the first part of the 1980s (and long after the others had faded).

At the end of this performance, Ponty does a medley of three of his popular songs: "Ethereal Mood/Wondering On The Milky Way/Egocentric." Songs like these lend…entire summary

This band on this tour were just draw dropping. He put out a live album from Dec. 78 which is definitely worth picking up. Casey Scheuerell is super underrated. Mind blowing!

There is no music like this anymore. I saw him in pittsburgh pa. at the old syria mosque. first row. unreal.

Gt to see him twice in San Francisco (actually, the East Bay)in 76 and 77. Each time had Daryl Steurmer on guitar before he left for Phil Collins' band. Tom Fowler on bass the first time and then Ralphe. Drums were handled by Steve Smith, before he left for Journey. Each show was great, but the best part was when Tom Fowler put down his bass, picked up a violin, and did a duet with Ponty on Renaissance. Smith held the bass in his lap at the drum kit, played it while doing foot pedal drums. Just killer. Of course, Alan Zavod was incredible both times. That was at Zellerbach Hall Berkeley in 76.

i was blessed to be able to see this genius perform at rock island, illinois, augustana college, centennial hall, circa 1978. a sound perfect venue where we were able to walk to the front and lean on the stage and look up to this master of strings

This stuff simply doesn't date. It's got some of the best players of the genre on this recording - most notably for me, the fabulous Allan Zavod on keyboards, and the much-underrated Ralphe Armstrong on bass. What amazes me is that this was billed as a B-side concert in a recent Vault newsletter! Viva la B!!

Wonderful. Isn't it amazing how many great jazz musicians played, at one time or another, with Frank Zappa?

I agree, the musicians here are truly exceptional! I have been a fan of Jamie Glaser's for a while now. Listening to his old stuff and the new, proves his remarkable talent hasn't faded with time. It has only got better and better! Great stuff!

Great shows in a truly great venue. And, always great to hear more Casey Scheuerell.

I had only heard "Return to Forever" This is great! I now appreciate my headphones much much more.
