Concert Summary

James Cotton had some mighty big shoes to fill when he replaced Muddy Water's harmonica player, Little Walter, in 1954. Having learned how to wail from none other than Sonny Boy Williamson himself, Cotton was well prepared, and over the next 12 years, he played an integral role in Muddy Water's music as well as the Chicago blues scene in general. By 1966, he was prepared to make it on his own and formed the James Cotton Blues Band, releasing his debut…entire summary

Saw this band dozens of times back on long island and in nyc back in the seventies, the my fathers place concerts in roslyn, LI were by far the best! Just total, high energy, in your face blues !! little bo, who resembled a miniature version of a young muddy waters was playing sax the likes of I've never heard since. somes years back, at a small club here in atlanta, matt murphy hsd told me that charles camese was killed in a car wreck. I was heartbroken, one of the most tasteful bass guitar players in the world...............

I was there for this concert. We went to hear James Cotton and have always remembered it well. He had the whole audience dancing and sweating right along with him. He did somersaults his energy infected everyone in the hall. Funny I don't even remember listening to the Mahavishnu at all.

I saw the James Cotton Band in the early 70's @ The Fillmore West in SF . He was second on the bill to The Chicago Transit Authority ,who I was there to see for the first time . I did not know of James Cotton at the time but left with a memory I will never forget . In the coarse of an amazing set James did a somersault across the stage with the microphone and harp in hand and came up playing .I was 17 at the time and had never seen anything like it . Years later I stopped by a nightclub in Corte Madera CA called "Uncle Charlies" . James was helping in a blues review at the club . He had just finished most of the songs he was playing that night and I was disappointed that I had missed his stuff . But he came over to the bar where I was sitting and ordered a drink . I talked with him for 10 minutes or so . Told him about the Fillmore show and his acrobatic talents I had witnessed . He was grinning ear to ear as he was years older and not about to try anything like that in the shows anymore .I showed him my harmonica and he says "well come on, lets go blow some " I had come very close to getting a lesson from the man himself . One of his people came over and got him away from me about that time . But I just thought the world of him to even make the offer .I sure hope he's well and happy . I will always remember the great times listening to the great "James Cotton " .
