Concert Summary

The Ash Grove will long be remembered as the West Coast epicenter of the traditional folk and blues revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s. As such, the Los Angeles venue was a critical component not only in the careers of many important folk and blues artists, but as an educational environment to many younger musicians and songwriters, providing them with firsthand exposure to the best of the best in an intimate setting. Also a focal point for progressive thought, the Ash Grove would have an equally strong impact on the cultural and political perspective of these young emerging artists,…entire summary

Ry was also influenced by Steve Mann whose January, 1966 Ashgrove concert is also archived at Wolfgang's Vault. Mann, Cohen and Cooder were all regular performers at the Ashgrove and also good friends. Steve was also a big influence on Jorma Koukkennan of Hot Tuna whose song "Mann's Fate" is dedicated to him. Thanks for all of these memorable Ashgrove shows.

Could it be the other guitarist is David Blue, original name Stuart David Cohen, who played with Dylan in the Rolling Thunder Revue, and died in 1982 at age 41?

This is amazing. Jackie DeShannon would later break Jimmy Page's heart..."Tangerine" was written for her, according to both Jimmy and Marianne Faithful...no wonder. A beautiful and formidable woman...

Wow. I wasn't familiar with this music until I saw this in your recent email blast. I decided to give it a listen. It's flat out outstanding. Hard to believe this was a 19 year old singer and 16 year old guitarist.

I am overwhelmed by the talent exhibited in this performance. 48 years ago I could have heard the genesis of Emmylou Harris and Mark Knoffler. Kudos to Wolfgang for bringing this gem to our audio attention. I'm going to listen again and again.
