Concert Summary

Hoyt Axton was always on the fringe of rock 'n' roll stardom. He found incredible success as a songwriter, and marginal success as a recording artist, performer and later, film actor. Though his name may not be on instantly recognizable, some of the songs he wrote will remain popular for decades to come.

Axton was a burly figure in the late 1950s and early '60s, and was originally positioned to become a professional athlete while attending college in…entire summary

One of the great poets, like Roger Miller, and Kris Kristfferson.

"Inn Of The Beginning"! Boy, that takes me back. Used to listen to KFAT as far north as we could, see somebody great in Cotati, or Hopland, then drive back to Boulder Creek.....a long drive. I love the SonoMarin pickers from then, still have my "First Press" LP. Hoyt was such a nice man. Met him(thru his bus driver)a couple of times in Seattle, always had toime to chat, especially the time he spotted my eyes were WAY too dilated for a Young Republican.

I had the fortune to meet Mr.Axton in 1990 while covering the ACM's in Nashville for Canadian Radio. His health was on the decline, however he couldn't have been more accommodating.Mr.Axton took time for an imprompt interview, recorded station id's (what a voice) and finially posed for pictures with my wife and I.The photo is still displayed with pride.Hoyt Axton was a gentle-man and a great songwriter.I continue to smile when I catch his cameo in WKRP.

Hi farmerbee, I was lucky enough to meet him several times, I was a photographer in Northern California back in the mid to late 70s, and got to know many of the musicians who were in and out of that area.... Hoyt was a big man, with a big heart, big voice, and huge talent.... he was a tease, the first thing he said to me, he was pulling my leg...( I always limped when I was around him, one leg being pulled so often ) I have been a huge fan of his for years, his voice is so wonderful, melted butter to raspy...and all points between. I heard him once at the venerable "Inn of the Beginning" in Cotati,Sonoma County, California. It is a very small venue, and he didn't even need a michrophone there....his voice could pin you to the wall... He was genuinely a kind and gracious man, as were most of the musicians that I once knew, Maria Muldaur, David Bromberg, and many of the members of the old Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen...and of course all the people who played in their bands.... I was lucky to have been a part of that scene, it was music all the time and those musicians.....well... they were world class...if not the most well- known and top of the pops hit makers, they all had huge playlists, and each were capable of playing in many different styles of music. The talent of those northern California musicians of that time....whew...ya had to be there....

God, I always wanted to meet Hoyt Axton, but, of course, I never will. It makes me so sad that he has died, as, of course, we all do. If there is, indeed, a rock and roll heaven, I know he is there.
