Concert Summary

However, great reviews don't always transcend into great sales. None of Grin's four studio albums sold very well and after a run on Epic Records, the band moved over to A&M. This show was recorded on the band's first tour after they had released their initial A&M release, and includes "Beggars Day," one of the best songs Lofgren ever wrote. Recorded at Gaithersburg, MD's Shady Grove venue in what was one of the earliest of all the King Biscuit Flower Hour shows, this performance is a lively blend of three-chord rock and Americana lyrical landscapes—a formula that would later be adopted by…entire summary

I caught the awesome farewell concert at Kennedy Center, people were in tears at the end. Such a shame for this band to have to end. I could never understand why Nils would want to be in Neil's or Bruce's background when he clearly is a great act on his own or with Grin. Does anyone know how to download this concert?

First caught Nils during summer of 1975 in Boston at a little hole-in-the-wall club called The Jazz Workshop, right across from the ancient & infamous Lenox Hotel. A UNH buddy had played "Keith Don't Go" for me from Nils' first solo album, which he was promoting on this tour. I was blown away by the song, the album and the show. Have seen Nils more times since than I can count, plus a handful of times with the E Street Band. It used to amuse me when the Springsteen crowd would erupt in applause after hearing a Nils solo for the first time. I'd be thinking "Where the hell have you people been living; under a rock?". The E Street thing has been good for Lofgren's exposure, and pocketbook...I'm sure, but I miss seeing him in small clubs and taverns. The mini-tramp (which he hasn't used since falling on his guitar upon last launch), the accordian, piano, etc. Nils has a knack for sailing, and it's stamped with his own brand name.

Saw Grin at a less than stellar room at Memphis State University and it must have been this tour. It i so good to have confirmation that Nils did use a trampoline on stage. I sometimes don't tell people because I don't think that they will believe me. I also remember Nils playing the guitar behind his head and with his teeth. Nils, don't go.

saw nils at the trenton fairgrounds,at the trenton war memorial, and at a club called "city gardens" in trenton.he was there with his brother and his trampoline.place was not crowded, sat at the bar with him, asked to play what one of my favorite songs by grin,"see what love can do"nils said it went too far back, could'nt remember it.nils is one the best guitar players i have ever seen.heard he just had a hip replacement, hope everything turns out ok.just listen to the piano on neil youngs southern man ,nils was 18 at the time he played that.i'm sure bruce knows what a gem he has in his band

the lofgren's were neighbors when i was a kid. 'always been a fan since those days. nils has been in springsteen's band for quite a number of years now. i think he's probably doing just fine. the lofgren's are some really fine people. what a treat to hear these shows.

Great show. That's drummer Bob Berberich on lead vocals on tracks 1,3 & 7. Was too young to see these guys live- what a treat to hear this. First saw Nils in '75 at Trenton State Fairgrounds- day long festival with Aerosmith, Kingfish, Slade, Poco, Mahogany Rush and others. Nils stole the show, and I was an instant fan at age 14.

This concert was actually at the end of Grin's run. The band was formed in 1971 and they put our four albums in four years. Nils had already done session work and joined Crazyhorse. The guitar playing on this concert is inspired. Listen to Nil's technique; Moon Tears is a nice jam and Beggar's Day and You're the Weight are old Crazyhorse songs that Nils contributed to the band. The band sounds sharp and tight in the concert. Nils was an undiscovered star that never got that break. His guitar is incredible and his songs were melodic and well written.
