Concert Summary

After catching early performances by Jefferson Airplane during the summer of 1965, husband and wife Jerry and Grace Slick decided to start their own band. Recruiting Jerry's brother, Darby, on guitar and several friends, they debuted as the Great Society on October 15, 1965 at North Beach's Coffee Gallery. They continued performing around San Francisco throughout 1966, often…entire summary

Conspicuous Only in it's Absence is the rest of this "Collector's Edition" concert. The Great! Society. May there have been more shows recorded? They do a great! Nature Boy, and Grimly Forming too. Fuck!

This is what it's all about! Some rare material from the San Francisco scene. Sure, it does sound similar to the Collectors compilation (which come from these shows at the Matrix), but I'll take this any day over the many Airplane shows in the Vault. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the Airplane shows are there, but I see the Vault's value in bringing us stuff we haven't heard, from bands that don't get heard, stuff that hasn't circulated for years among tape traders. So, please, more San Francisco scene, 1965-1968, thank you! As for this set: thoroughly enjoyable... Grace Slick's voice is far better than any of the Airplane shows in the Vault (most of which make for some painful listening!), the musicians are fairly tight, and the arrangements of the two classics take us along flight paths the Airplane never traveled: youthful, daring, and forward looking! Very interesting and enjoyable. Thanks again, and bring us some more!

PS--I love how at the end of Father Bruce Grace and David sing "well well well...FUCK!"

This does sound similar to the Columbia release titled 'Collectors' edition' or whatever. But I also wouldn't be surprised if this a different recording. Sure, it might hail from a weekend of shows from which the LP recording arises, but I think the sound mix is much crisper and the guitar solo at the end of Somebody to Love is slightly different. These guys are an amazing band, no joke. However, it was the looseness of the Society which turned Grace toward the Airplane, the latter being evidently more successful. Nonetheless, both groups proved to be pioneers in what I believe to be one of the greatest movements in the history of rock n roll.

WOW! Grace sounds so clear amd pure-what power. From listening to this it seems the JA was reborn in the GS image when Grace joined. The JA Takes Off wasn't exactly a roaring success, but when Surrealistic Pillow came out, they were on their way to the top and later (before Starship) I even thought at the time, a real political force: JA for President. Thanks Vault Guys for these great jams from The Great Society, Love from Texas-jan.

A fantastic band and any attempt to find any more Great Society material would be much appreciated. Hate to be a damp sqib -but this sounds remarkably similar to the Columbia LP??

Amazing that this recording even exists! After reading the article "Good Riddance to the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love" at http://crawdaddy.wolfgangsvault.com/Article.aspx?id=2928 I hoped for any shows by the Great Society at WG Vault. There is a pretty good compilation CD out called 'Grace Slick & The Great Society - Collector's Item' on Comumbia (CGK 30459) if you are a fan and want to hear more.

I hate to pop anybody's balloons but even though Grace had enormous talent - esp. her amazing pipes - I heard her and JA suck many times in the late 60s & early 70s...mostly fueled by Grace's substance "issues". Granted I heard some amazing performances by her and/or JA...but I found them to be a fairly inconsistent band. And NO I'm not in AA ;^>

Interesting hearing Grace in her early days. I never heard her give a bad performance. Bless Its Pointed Little Head. Check it out.
