Concert Summary

On this Saturday night, the Grateful Dead followed Sons of Champlin and the Jefferson Airplane, closing a monumental show. While this set contains only four songs, it is absolutely astounding from a performance aspect, with almost every second a delicious feast of late '60s era exploration.

The experimentation begins right away with a beautifully executed "Dark Star" that features all the dynamics and nuances associated with the Dead's finest ensemble playing. The…entire summary

Thx. Very nice recording and memories that follow me to this day. Here's a poem for my cats:
    Saint Mandu
    With a nose, remember him
in the garden? He goes and then
    returns to say hello.

Wishing well with the golden bird
Humans are cold or too warm
    Its the time for returning
these claws don't work well in the key of - - -

I was at this concert. This was an unbelievable SF concert! The Sons of Chaplin came out in red stripped pajamas and then Hot Tuna followed. Graham Nash and Steven Still were in town for their concert, which was canceled due to the unexpected death of David Crosby's wife. Stills and Nash did a beautiful little bonus set. The Airplane came out with Gracie Slick wearing white fringe and they rocked the house. Then came the Dead. The Dead did their set with lots of guests including Jack Cassidy from the Airplane, Steven Stills and Carlos Santana. When the concert ended, we left Winterland and the sun was rising in San Francisco. What a night, probably about 8 hours of music by what was the best that San Francisco had to offer. I was delighted to find this wonderful Grateful Dead set to listen to. What memories, what music, it didn't get any better than this! If I remember correctly, the admission to this historic event was $5, God Bless Bill Graham. Thanks to Wolfgang for the recording.

This show is a magnificent example of the jaw dropping improvisational prowess of the Grateful Dead at this stage in their career.Like they once said on a good night the room would disappear. This is a perfect reading of every tune in the set.Would of loved to have seen them live at this time, witnessed the live spectical in London some years later

My brother, good friend & I were at this show in the days when you could get away with sitting on the stage when they were playing! I was then 16 and am now 55 but we all remmeber the date, 10/25/69 & the incredible show that also had the Sons of Champlain & the Airplane-- Truly a night we will all never forget!
