Concert Summary

Few 1967 Grateful Dead recordings survive and even fewer remain from early in the year, prior to the "Summer Of Love," when San Francisco would receive a mass influx of young people and its music and social scene would gain international media attention. These two Grateful Dead sets, which bookended a set by Chuck Berry, occurred the night after the band's debut album was released. Their local popularity had steadily been increasing and with their first album fresh on the streets, these shows had a celebratory atmosphere, no doubt in part due to being surrounded by friends and…entire summary

Exactly which weird song are you talking about ? All these are available a hundred times over. I wasn't aware they played "Me and My Uncle in '67. They didn't break it out until 70.

Whew, I saw the Dead with Traffic, and I love the song me and my uncle, it's "great", and "terific", too.

I love these concerts, can't get over the great sound quality more than 40 years later. I would love to have been at the shows with the GD, Jorma, JA, and Quicksilver.

Of course one has to agree, love the sound. But, like with some other GD concert reviews posted above by the vault crew, this one: "that hints at the freeform jamming they were already quite capable of," makes the Dead sound like a start-up, just getting its chops, which they were not in 1967. If we were talking last quarter 1965 here, this might apply more. They had almost two years worth of playing experience by this time (at least as much as JA for ex.), the acid tests were long gone. The SF exodus to to SoL commercialization wasn't even long-off in March '67. Did they add more to their chops after 3/67? Of course, but which musician of worth doesn't grow?
