Concert Summary

This legendary Dead show is the last of six shows staged over seven nights at San Francisco's prestigious Orpheum Theater, in July, 1976, and was recorded for broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour. It was the first time the Dead had launched a tour in nearly two years, and these shows were designed to take advantage of the hoopla that coincided with America's Bicentennial.

The Dead had "retired" after their 1974 tour, due to an over ambitious two-year tour that featured the group's infamous Wall of Sound PA system. That monster setup consisted of 89 300-watt solid-state and three…entire summary

    Nice transition into Stella

according to deadbase, there's a NFA inside Stephen, hence the odd return to the theme on this version, but the edit was seemless, so King Biscuit audio geniuses get 1 point for that, score is tied 1-1! :) Sugar Mag is also missing in between stella and JBG..big deal, right? But, after hearing the dubbed in out-of-tempo clapping when Phil dropps the bomb(again!) to get to other one out of Wheel I say 10 points against K.Biscuit audio people...but, hey think of all the live music they've given ver the years, I'll be forgiving...a little...Thank You, BILL GRAHAM!!

unmistakable Dark Star Jam near the end of Let it grow(around 14-15 minutes in)!! Really great energy thru whole thing, sure wish the King Biscuit audio geniuses had not dubbed in random audience noise, though!!

I had this tape too. One of my all time favorites. I lent it to someone and never got it back. I have waited 15 years to hear this again. Thank you!

    Orpheum Theatre San Francisco 7/18/76

I spent the Summer of '76 truckin' around the West Coast and living out of a van with a good buddy. When we pulled into San Francisco and down Market Street, we passed the Orpheum Theatre and saw that the Dead were there through Sunday night, July 18. We went that night but the show was sold out and we struck out with scalpers. We returned on July 18 and got tickets from a scalper -- I think it was $30 for a ticket that had a $6.50 face value. I still have the ticket stub -- $6.50 to see the Dead! It was the first time I'd ever seen the Dead and part of a strange trip in San Francisco that I'll never forget.
