Concert Summary

Although short by normal standards, this is one of the most extraordinary sets of the Grateful Dead's entire career. This unexpected set was a big surprise, not only for its highly unusual musical content, but simply for the fact that the Grateful Dead performed. It's all ancient history now, but in October of 1974, the Dead officially retired from live performance, after filming the Winterland run that would comprise The entire summary

By 1975 these cat"s needed some time off and a well deserved vacation. For the lucky people in the bay area they did catch some music like we are hearing at kezar. It would have been cool to see them work all the blues for allah space into their shows but as they say you can"t have everything. And by the time "76 came along all those small theatre shows kinda help you thru, i just wish i could have caught more than the 37 that i did see and by the time i got some rest of my own it was 1977 and you know what that was all about.

Not to pile on here, but you guys are entirely correct about Donna. Her off-key screeching became more than a mere a distraction. As her accursed time with the band grew longer, her caterwauling grew louder and more unbearable. This, BTW, has nothing to do with whether or not she was a nice person, although for the pain she inflicted on my ears over dozens of shows I still find it hard to forgive!

gotta agree about donna, saw this show and many, many others and Donna just always looked out of place ALL the time, didn't contribute, couldn't sing, I just never got it - sorry

robace-thanks for the backup there bud i hate to say anything bad about donna by all accounts she was & still is a nice person (I heard she toured recently with the Zen Tricksters of NJ) & she wasnt bad to look at either but the recordings say it all-often out of tune, wailing yoko ono like in the background just didnt fit in with the bands overall sound or vibe.

This was the Dead's year of "retirement" from performing though short lived.Great show, creepy blues for allah energy.

to scrapmetal: you are quite right about about Donna who really added NOTHING to the Dead....after Pigpen died they....were a much better band when she was not around...one wonders why she was.....I stopped going as much as used to around '76 thru '78 maybe once a year...always had a way of ruinning "Playing in the Band " "Scarlet Begoinas" "Eyes of the World " it still makes me cringe to hear some of them...always glad to hear from the anti-Donna camp!!!!!

this recording cements my long held opinion that the dead were so much better WITHOUT donna

This was one of the first cassette bootlegs I ever had back in maybe '84/85? I wasn't familiar with the "Blues for Allah" material.... pretty much just the "best of" records.... Needless to say, this blew my mind. After 20-some years, it still does. Great set.... unlike anything they'd put on display in concert before (and that's saying a lot).
