Concert Summary

This is the third night of this memorable Fillmore West run. An outstanding show from beginning to end, containing several song transitions unique to this show and a wonderful version of "Lovelight" with Janis Joplin sitting in. This is one of the all time classic Grateful Dead shows.

Beginning quietly and in extremely unusual fashion for 1969, they kick the show off acoustically. They open with "Dire Wolf" and continue with an acoustic rendition of "Dupree's Diamond…entire summary

Question: I have seen 2 different versions of the setlist, one of which shows ">" thru everything until the end of "Rag," the other stops the transitions after "Sittin'" - in order to keep all the segues, should I burn everything thru "Rag" on one disc, or can I even up the disc times without losing transitions by starting disc 2 with "Cold Rain?" Thanks.

I was at this show....Yes, I'm that old) I remember it being good as we laid back on the old sofas, then suddenly there was a "scream" and everyone came alive. It was Janis getting on stage. In this recording you can barely hear the audience reacting as Janis got on stage! It was a great moment and this is in my top shows list.

Clarification - The crappy sounding reel with the warble doesn't happen till Me and My Uncle. The rest of the show is pretty clean, although a little distant sounding, but i'm sure that's just the source. I think this might be the best Doin That Rag i've ever heard, i'm completely stunned, not to mention the Sittin on top of the world is even rarer.

When I got this tape way back when, which was considered a rare gem of a tape, I remember it sounded like it was on it's 100th gen and had a horrible tape warble. I always wondered what the source sounded like. Now I know the source had the tape warble and was on it's 50th gen for sound, so my cassette was actually pretty good quality after all. Still very humbling to hear Pigpen so enamored with someone, I can see why.

I took the bus home 1 day & lady turned me on to this site, I didn't realize I should've told her about echoeshub.com that shares roio all free of charge, when I was looking forward to this as another, but I wasn't expecting the $-amt downld fee. but I love the listening, man.

you say you like the grateful dead. forget the 80sorthe90s. check out 67-68-69 when the dead were on fire.mountains of the moon is a beautiful ballad followed by an incredible jam of dark star st.stephen then the eleven. This is as good as it gets which is pretty good. listen and enjoy. do not be afraid to go back 40 or 50 years. these shows sound like they were recorded last week.

So I have this memory. My friend and I went to Fillmore West to see the Dead. At some point the loud music, all the tripping people were getting a little bit too much for us. We walked into the cafe over on the other side of the stairs to get some water or something to drink. There were a couple of French doors that opened onto small balconies, with wrought iron railings, looking out onto Market Street. We stood there for a while getting fresh air and alternately watched the Dead on a video feed to two TV sets up on the wall at each end of the room... and the outside world... people getting on and off the streetcars and car traffic.

We could hear the music and it was a great little spot to take a break and collect our senses. I look down and a little Porche Speedster stops in the Loading Zone right in front of the entrance on Market Street. I try to focus on the car but the psychedelic graphics are not making sense to me... and just as the car rolls to a stop, a ball of Boa feathers leaps from the car and runs into the entry hall.

A few minutes later we look up on the TV monitors and there is Janis up on stage. We went back into the ballroom and worked our way to the side of the stage where we had a good view. I remember Mr. Pen and Janice doing the longest version of Love Lights I ever heard. My fading memory also tells me that they polished off a bottle of Southern Comfort on stage too. Hard to believe that was 42 years ago... long strange trip it's been.

I found some album art for this show. I'm not sure of its origins.
