Concert Summary

This is the second set of the first night of a particularly interesting four-night run at the Fillmore West. Although no special guests are featured like the other three nights, this performance is an excellent example of the band toward the end of the classic Live/Dead album era.

The second set is one long sequence of music and begins in fine form with "China Cat Sunflower." The improvisation out of "China Cat" is quite interesting, as this is still several months before it would be paired with "I Know You Rider" for the rest of the Dead's career. Instead, …entire summary

Would it be possible to add a 6th STAR for rating concerts? I'm afraid 5 just don't do this justice. I've only gotten as far as Dark Star, and already I'm out of stars...

The bomb!!! In and out up and down. OOps did I give my age away. No left turn goes unstoned! The alternative masses of today, if they have ears they ought to hear!

Dark Star....I think up to this point I enjoy this instance the best. Listening to it hooked into my stereo (Hafler powering Altec-Lansing 604E duplex speakers)...just brings into the room the band. What a band in a time that can't and won't ever be repeated. I could never figure out why Jerry didn't run for president. If elected, and with the band in top cabinet positions, there would be world peace. No doubt in my mind. At any rate, what a great site with great venues. Kudos to you!

absolument magnifique! (Dark Star) 40 years later: same vibes. As far as I'm concerned, this web site is the palimpsest of my musical memory. So thanks again and again.

What's blowing me away is, I'm an old school hippie "usta'be", with a new PC, and I just found this site. The real amazing thing is that I actually was at the Fillmore on two of the nights of this series, and I can almost "see" it again. The Dead were at their best, and I'm going to stop typing and just listen. So long ago and far away, but not really. Peace.

Rahrah, you wouldn't happen to have or know of more tape of that show than already circulates would you? That is one of the holy grails. From what does circulate it is obvious Jimmy is really enjoying himself.

Dark Star, St. Stephen, The Eleven and Lovelight are amazing versions of these songs. I think the intensity of these versions are just as good or even better than others Pigpen!

Yes I was! The band was held over for a Sunday night show. If the 26th was a Sunday, that was the night! It was an unforgettable experience. Everyone hung around afterwards. No on wanted to leave. I was also at the sound check. There was something in the air... you could feel that something special could happen, and it did.
