Concert Summary

The Grateful Dead's last show at the Fillmore West was inherently a legendary event, and despite the fact that the group often failed to deliver their best performances at major events, on this night they cetainly rose to the occasion. This is also one of the last shows featuring the original, five-piece prototypical Dead lineup. Pigpen would become deathly ill a few days later, and Keith Godchaux began rehearsing with the band a few weeks afterwards. On this night, however, Pigpen is in remarkably strong form and Garcia seems to have boundless energy, as he also played on complete sets for…entire summary

I enjoyed every GD concert I ever attended. Jerry was great every time. It wasn't about whether he was past his prime, but about enjoyment of a special shared experience that transcends time and space. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

From around the time of this show to the end of the "Europe '72" tour, the Grateful Dead were enjoying what i once heard referred to as their "jewelbox phase" - making music that was unsurpassed (in their career at the very least) in its' pure beauty, technical excellence, recording quality, with a very soulful feel (which K. Godchaux supplemented admirably, rapidly becoming very comfortable w/the Dead on the accoustic grand piano, starting with shows the November after this show was recorded), and playing such diverse, comprehensive songs of their own creation, as well as some of the more inspired covers of ANY band, that a music fan coudln't really go werong attending those early '70s concerts by the GD - I know, I followed my own advice on that one MANY, MANY times. As far as 7/2/71 being a great show, it ranks right up there with some of the top 15 or 20%... Check out The Harding theatre show from November, 1971, the Lyceum theatre on the Strand (5/26/72 - last show of the aforementioned "E '72" tour and quite possibly in the Top 5 of ALL TIME. Really, there ARE A LOT of Good Gd shows, you just have to shovel through about 90 lbs. of s--t to get to the diamonds. Talk about playing past your prime..............JEEEEEZZZZ. Did the rest of the Dead family spend all their dough on that much tie-dye and all those veggie burritos that they had to prop up poor Jerry for the last 20 or so years when he head clearly passed his prime around the time of the show we've been discussing??????????

I think I dropped my doobie in the toilet listening to that set. I'm not sure where it went but it is all gone. Great music.

I was there for this one. Garcia played full sets on guitar w/The Rowen Brothers and peddle steel w/New Riders before the Dead and this was the last time Pig was healthy enough to Really Rock and because of that this for me was the last time I saw what was The Good Old Grateful Dead. They and We had a real good time & as always thanks to Bill G. too.

In the fall of 1971, a college friend of mine spent the summer in Berkley taking a summer course, and was there when this concert was played live over a local radio station. He patched into the receiver, and so got a tape that was much better than most concert tapes available at the time (which were generally recorded by people in the audience holding microphones). He returned to campus that fall with the tape (a reel to reel), and naturally we played it to death. We all parted ways at graduation I made a copy, but I never forgot this show, and for 35 years I’ve been trying to hear it again. I’ve looked for it on Google and Ebay, to no avail. So imagine my delight when the second set appeared on WV a while back, topped only by my unbridled joy when the first set appeared recently, featuring the “Hard To Handle” that is my all time favorite Dead performance. This whole concert is the Dead, with Pigpen, in their absolute prime. Listening to it now turns me on just as much as it did all those years ago. Thank you WV!!
