Concert Summary

In terms of the Grateful Dead's live performances during the 1960s, no run of shows better conveys their expressionistic collective improvisation than a 1969 engagement at Fillmore West that began on February 27th and ran for four consecutive nights through March 2nd. These concerts would be mined for what many consider to be the band's most important album, Live/Dead, as well as subsequent archival releases decades later. For anyone wondering why so many listeners were so powerfully drawn to The Grateful Dead, one only need listen to the Live/Dead album, which captured the…entire summary

I have been looking for this show for a long time.this is easily one of the top 5 dark stars they ever pl;ayed at a show. All those youngsters who like the 80s dead are listening to a very mature group of musicians.mellow and dare I say getting tired GO BACK 20 YEARS and really listen. Electric Fire. Men on a mission. Hot & Eager.

Oh, one more thing. Out of the four Dark Stars from this four night run of shows, this is THEEE one. The boys "got it right" on the first night. All the other Dark Stars from the other three nights all have their merits, but start to finish, they nailed it on the first night. I'm not daring to proclaim "greatest Dark Star" or any of that subjective stuff. I am only referring to this four night run where they were trying to get the rest of the recording for Live/Dead as they knew they had a worthy Eleven>Lovelight already in the can.

I prefer the mix on this; it sounds like the original mix on the first official release. The remastered mix on the currently available official CD from the band buries Jerry's vocals on Dark Star terribly to the point where he sounds like he is singing from backstage. But this sounds the like the original mix from the vinyl release. Thanks to all involved in making these recordings available!

In case anyone is wondering, the Eleven on the Live/Dead album is the one from the January 26th, 1969 Avalon show, also a great listen! Man oh man, winter '69 was a lot more than just the "first of several career creative peaks"! It was THE peak! Not just of the Dead, but of an entire genre, of an historical era, and perhaps, of an age of enlightenment.
