Concert Summary

The Grateful Dead's 1967 debut album retains its charms and represents the band's primal early era when the core quintet was primarily performing cover material. However, it was the group's far more daring sophomore album, Anthem of the Sun, released in July of 1968, that conveyed the group's approach to live performing, compositional originality, and promise for the future. This highly ambitious album was unlike anything that had come before it, featuring a multi-layered blend of live and studio recordings, often with multiple performances playing simultaneously. Yet another example of why we LOVE Wolfgang's!

My old copy of DeadBase lists a Lovelight to end the 1st set. (Taper's Compendium has a mixed up setlist.) anybody know anything?

This set (and especially the New Potato Caboose) are acid drenched! I think I'm having a flashback just listening to it! How nice. :-)

    Thank you Wolfie!

Tom Constanten does not play on this show. He provided some studio keyboards on the Anthem of the Sun album but didn't join the band permanently until late November 1968.

You know the old quote attributed to Duke Ellington about Jazz : If you have to ask what it is..." applies equally to the good old Grateful Dead. You had to be there in 1967-68 at the Fillmore or at Winterland to truly appreciate this band at the height of their psychedelic powers. I was there and live to tell about it...
