Jerry's guitar is flawless. He takes you on a trip you never return from. Bob Weir's vocals especially on El Paso. And Pig Pen dug down deep. I miss the REAL Grateful Dead that I saw this night in Berkeley. They continue to keep me "young".

To all the clowns commenting on how the rock and roll stuff the dead did like johnny be goode and el Paso was anemic don't understand the concept behind the band. They celebrated thier roots by performing them in "Dead " Style, they not only paid hommage to the architects of Rock and roll but did blues grass and country music. It is a testiment to thier vision of American music. I am sure Chuck and Marty enjoyed the publicity.

Spoon's got a point, at that time, chuck berry, bo diddly, and numerous other rock and blues men were doing revival tours that drew small crowds but were well received. It was to me when Jerry and his boys performed johnny b. goode etc., it was merely filler material when in actuality one could see the real deal in a nearby venue a week later[or sooner]. However still love'em.

Strange enough, this concert at Berkeley Community Theatre was the first, last and only time I ever saw Grateful Dead live. So, it was great to find this one on Concert Vault and re-live the show. Though I suspect drugs and other substances may have contributed to some loss of memory cells, it seemed like this show went on forever. Garcia's mind-bending solos and PigPen's groaning vocals were my most striking recollections. I've heard hundreds of Dead shows (via tapes, records, CD's and MP3's) over the years but this one remains the one that captured my imagination first. "Bertha" and "Playing in The Band" were my favorites.

The Dead at their best. Wish we could put on our tie dyes and do it again. Poor Mr. Spoon missed all the fun. Can't wait for the 2nd set.

BERKELEY '71 just wanted to say, it was a grate show. Last show that i saw with "pig", only 15 years old. i loved 'mr charlie' and 'brokedown', and the only way i want to see 'hard' (to handle) is with the "pen". judge me if you will, BUT still will always loved 'the promised LAND'. and this is only the FIRST set.... is there a second set, i thought i saw more...? peace, (~};)

hey dcmetro, you don't have to love everything the Dead did....hell the Dead did'nt love everything they did. Do you LOVE everything you do? This is one helluva show! Jerry's "heroin time"? what do you know about that and how does that figure into this show? good Lord, this was Jerry at his flaming best. I can't imagine rock musicians doing drugs backstage....never happened. :)
