Concert Summary

This show by Dutch classic rockers Golden Earring proves why the group had the ability to break out of their native European digs. Just listen to "Big Tree, Blue Sea," an ambitious prog-rock song that features a lengthy flute solo by frontman, Barry Hay. The song was originally recorded on the band's 1970 self-titled album and then revamped again with an extensive flute solo when they released their breakthrough Moontan album in 1973. In the first half of the song, Hay sounds like an overzealous Roger Daltrey; when he picks up the flute, he is paying obvious debt to Ian Anderson.…entire summary

I hate to say this, but it's a good concert.
Not taking in account the clown Hay, this is the best thing I heard from them live.
If they wouldn't have ignored the fine qualities in this band (Eelco Gelling was one of the best (blues)guitarists in Holland at the time, Robert Jan Stips is and was an icon in Dutch music en now plays the keyboards in the arty Nits, Bertus Borgers was a great rock-saxophone-player), they might have been on the international stages for much longer.
Barry Hay is an artist I am allergic to. What these musicians can do without him, is shown on the album Evergreens bij Stars and Stips., which features, Robert Jan Stips, Bertus Borgers, Rinus Gerritsen en Cesar Zuiderwijk. GREAT PROG!!
But as sad before, this one of theit better liveshows I know of.
Sadly they couldn't keep this level and they ended up covering themselfs in the series of Naked albums.

Golden Earring are definitely an underated band! I have their early studio albums on cd right up to Switch... Great music on all of these albums... Just don't understand why this band never got the credit they truly deserved... Barry Hays may not have been the greatest (vocalist) singer in the world but he could hold his own... & as far as George Kooymans goes well can anyone say (seriously underated)! Peace!

I've been familiar with Golden Earring for quite some time, yet the Switch album is something I've just discovered. It definitley does not sound like anything else from 1974/75. Way ahead of it's time and the live versions heard here make it all the more better.

It's time for Golden Earring to play Las Vegas. The Hard Rock wants them and so does Harrah's. Let's get them to play in the states again and bring the big show, it can only happen in Las Vegas. Let's get this done!

This was my favorite period and album SWITCH and was to young to see them at Winterland but they made CUT and played with 38 Special at the San Francisco civic in 1983... this band is still going strong and has not peaked yet...
