Concert Summary

Before there was hip-hop, gangsta rap, Def Jam or Biggie Smalls, there was Gil Scott-Heron. Scott-Heron was a college educated, street-smart urban poet with a strong musical background - a spoken word artist whose contributions to the genre have become as undeniable as they were influential. Born on April fool's day 1949, in Chicago, IL, Scott-Heron actually spent most of his early childhood in the Deep South, 50 miles from the Mississippi border in Jackson, TN, where he was raised by his grandmother. While there, he was picked as…entire summary

I first heard Gil Scott-Heron in '82 at college; it was B Movie. I've always remembered his "And when America found itself having a hard time facing the future, they looked for people like John Wayne. But since John Wayne was no longer available, they settled for Ronald Reagan."

It was great to find this early GSH gig here. WV comes through again.

This live concert is wonderful! Cystal clear. Gil's live humor on the New Deal is awesome. This is a historic recording. Keep up the good work!

@GTRZAN I first heard Mr. Scott-Heron on WHFS, too. They also played his music on the Howard U. radio station. I was hooked from the first song off "125th and Lenox". I love where he was taking his music on "I'm New Here". We will all miss him.

Today, on hearing of his death, I was glad to be able to come here to listen to an entire concert. RIP.

Saw GSH in Sunderland MA of all places in 1979 or 80 and played pinball before the concert with him. Incredible memory. The show was at a dinky bar in the middle of nowhere but GSH rocked the house. Amazing show.

That was The Rusty Nail. It has since burned to the ground.

    Gil at his zenith!

Had the distinct pleasure of seeing Gil and his band in a small venue in Pojoaque, New Mexico, when Ronald the ray-gun was in office. Even made a low-fi bootleg of the performance. Truly a wonderful performance from a great wordsmith and musician. His voice was a balm and a call to action during those times. I was glad to learn that he's (mostly?) kicked his addictions and is making music again. We need him (and he needs us).

    Thanks for posting this concert.
