Concert Summary

The first superstar drummer, Gene Krupa became a household name in the 1930s with the Benny Goodman Orchestra (his solo on "Swing, Swing Swing" from Goodman's famous Carnegie Hall concert of 1938 remains a textbook example of show-stopping excellence on the kit). A flamboyant, energetic figure on the bandstand, Krupa gained fame with Goodman through the '30s and became a bandleader in his own right in 1939, scoring hits during the '40s with his Gene Krupa Orchestra, which featured singer Anita O'Day and trumpeter Roy Eldridge. Gene recorded this on his Big Noice from Winnetka album with the same personnel. Eddie Wasserman wasn't playing the same solo over and over again, for sure, even if he's off mike

My uncle gave Gene Krupa a ride in his cab when he was playing in the Haverhill, Mass. area, sometime back in the late 50's. Gene lit up a reefer, to which my uncle said, "You ain't smoking that in my cab! You either put that out, or put you out." Krupa complied. My uncle stands 6'8", and not even the great (and he was great) Gene Krupa would stand up to him.

Whatever gig I'm doing, when the leader points at me to take a solo, I summon the spirit of GK and play a Sing , Sing, Sing type solo.
