Concert Summary

The first superstar drummer, Gene Krupa became a household name in the 1930s with the Benny Goodman Orchestra (his solo on "Swing, Swing Swing" from Goodman's famous Carnegie Hall concert of 1938 remains a textbook example of show-stopping excellence on the kit). A flamboyant, energetic figure on the bandstand, Krupa gained fame with Goodman through the '30s and became a bandleader in his own right in 1939, scoring hits during the '40s with his Gene Krupa Orchestra, which featured singer Anita O'Day and trumpeter Roy Eldridge. By the 1950s, he scaled back to a small group and continued to…entire summary

Whatever gig I'm doing, when the leader points at me to take a solo, I summon the spirit of GK and play a Sing , Sing, Sing type solo.

There wouldn't have been any rock and roll without pioneer 'standouts' like Gene Krupa. Gene had a lot to do with the dynamics that made early rock truly rock. Just listen to the drummers on all of the early r & r hits they all want to swing like Gene... Blaine, Starkey, Watts all of them. Ask them, they'll tell you so.

Better yet, just listen. And you'll hear it for yourself.

And 'Anonymous. 11/23.09, I don't know what the hell you listened to, but this sounds beautiful to me. Get a better set of 'phones.

I will admit that the first concert ever for me was to see Krupa Co at a local college when I was in high school[mid 60's]-even waited around the door until he left to get him to sign my program. i have perfected my air and thigh drums since then
