Concert Summary

These shows (which included a collection of Byrds hits, Dylan covers, and solo material from both men) became the basis of the 1979-80 partial Byrds reunion project known as McGuinn, Clark & Hillman.

Gene Clark was the second eldest of 13 children raised in a close family in Tipton, Missouri. He learned guitar at age 9, and soon was teaching himself songs by Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, and the Everly Brothers. After high school, he moved to…entire summary

This show is very enjoyable. What a tandem Clark & McGuinn were! Gene Clark had an amazing career. Especially because of his early exit I don't believe we ever got "The Byrds" at their peak (with all of the original members). Instead we got a glimpse of the potential for all 4 of the songwriters. Gene Clark got better and progressed into a more confident and competant songwriter after his tenure with the Byrds. Same story with Crosby solo and with CSN. Hillman continued to do great things with the Byrds and then The Burrito Bros./Manassas/Desert Rose Band, etc. McGuinn and "His Byrds" improved mainly with their live performances and had their own country influence on rock. Compared to the other members of the original Byrds Gene Clark didn't get his deserved props until much later in his career. This concert is evidence of his and McGuinn's talent and it's a shame they didn't get to work together more than they did.

Great recording!! Gene was the ultimate singer-song writer before the term was coined. Love his vocals and harmony with Roger and Chris - when they all toured together. Still think Rogers' twelve string jingle jangle and distinctive vocal style are the trademark sound of the Byrds. Plus her hung in there longer than all the rest!

I was lucky enough to catch Roger and Gene on this tour in a small club in Montreal. Going in to the show, I thought of Roger as the band leader and Gene just one of the guys in the band. I realized that night that The Byrds was as much Gene's band as it was Roger's. I was at a table maybe 10 feet from the stage. It was magic. Still one of my all time favourite shows.

couldn't agree more about gene clark. he's criminally under-rated. don't you find roger mcguinn incredibly frustrating? when he hits it, there is absolutely no one like him. but he misses it so often.

when I was 20 or so I simply liked Gene Clark's music ... now that I am near 60 I understand his music I miss him so much

Gene Clark was not appreciated in full until 20-30 years later while listening again and again to all types of Byrds music by myself as I aged. I saw them early in their career,& think the early shows and LP covers focused on a Beatles type sale image and not their music qualities. I plead guilty to buying into this concept also, but did recognize the group had something intangible for all members. The words and harmonies show in this two man concert even with Crosby's high voice missing.Sadly, so much talent is found after an artist's life is over, be in writing or singing.Great access to the vault's music.
