Concert Summary

Gary Burton has long divided his interests and efforts between the pursuit of a performing career and his commitment as a music professor at Berkeley School of Music in Boston. He is a self-taught vibraphonist - heavily inspired by the late Lionel Hampton - who has performed not only jazz, but rock and country as well. In his 40-plus-year career, he's worked as a soloist with his own quartet, and been a part of many historic duets, including Chick Coreaentire summary

Track 6 is a Duke Ellington composition called Fleurette Africane (African Flower). Burton first recorded the tune on his album: "Lofty Fake Anagram" (RCA Victor- late 1960's)

Track 7 sure sounds like a 16-bar blues to me....But I'm not familiar with "Careful." Great concert!

Now that we've discussed everything but the music, let it be mentioned that this is yet another super-solid show from one of jazz's most consistent yet relatively unheralded masters. Having Swallow and his sweet tunes plus Moses and Tiger makes this no step down from the Metheny etc etc Burton groups. His intro to Dreams is gorgeous, very musical, no jazz wank at all. Gary is a real class act and deserves nothing but praise in every way. Very nice to find this on here!

Can't put a title to it, but track 6 isn't Metheny's 'The Whopper' either.

Cut 7 is actually "Careful," written by Jim Hall--a 13-bar blues--as Gary Burton has said, "If you're not careful it'll turn into a 12-bar blues."
