Concert Summary

Recorded at the very first of his famed Halloween shows from New York's Palladium Theater (a yearly ritual for Zappa until he stopped performing), this performance demonstrates just how important Frank Zappa had become as one of rock's most enduring innovators. It also demonstrates Zappa's kooky and sardonic sense of humor. After introducing his band, and telling the audience that the show was being recorded, they launch into "San Ber'Dino," a song about a modern rodeo cowboy who falls on hard times. Singing lines like:…entire summary

I went to the 1977 concert at the Pallidium. I will always remember Zappa playing his guitar while sticking a lit cigarette into the top of the guitar while cranking out numerous notes. There was also a blowup doll that was somehow brought into the show that ended up getting passed around from band member to band member. Some things just always resonant in your memory.

yeah he's my artistic hero, been listening to him since I was 14. His family trust let a local theatre stage Joe's Garage last year. They did a really good job with it. I went 3 times. It's amazing how many truly brilliant artists he brought together and worked with. The word genius is thrown around too much, but it doesn't sufficiently explain or what he was and what he did. Zappa makes me happy!!

There have been many things said & analyzed wrt Frank's music, but how many out there are with me that his guitar solos were often sublimely beautiful ? I dont care that his technique didnt hold up to Vai's, etc. when it came to playing fast. It was actually when he slowed down and let things just roll out of his head onto the fretboard that his passages really touched me: So sweet, lyrical, and downright lovely. It's not just technique that makes a musician (often that's been misemphasized when it comes to the electric guitar): It's the IDEAS and FEELINGS that flow out of him/her while improvising. Some of his live guit stuff still makes me close my eyes and just start swaying back & forth...

Frank rules! Great concert..which I was old enough to see it. Started seeing FZ in concert around 2 years after, when I was 16. Living in NY was made it easy as I would run to the Halloween shows. Good quality recordings for it's time! This was a blast to listen to!
