Interview Summary

When Frank Zappa sat down in New York to record this interview with Mary Travers, it was technically in support of his recent live album, Bongo Fury. In actuality, the two end up talking more about contemporary classical music. Indeed, Zappa is well known for his "sophistication" and his distaste for consumer culture, and these viewpoints are well represented here as he expresses his opinions about opera and the current state of rock and roll. His sense of humor also shines throughout, as can be heard in stories about The Beatles, Elton John, and the Bonzo Dog Doo Da Band.…entire summary

FZ was such an incredible musician, composer and performer there can be only one word that can describe him - GENIUS! Don't read anything else about him until you read his autobiography. He was so misunderstood by so many people and so underappreciated by the masses. As for his misogyny - perceived or real - I think that he did not suffer fools lightly and was one of the most intelligent, well read and (self)educated people I've ever heard speak. He was not always as kind or affable as he was in this interview but he was always honest and he was, to me, absolutely hilarious. You found yourself laughing as he skewered everyone - including me and you! You either "get" him or you don't. If you don't, as FZ might say, *#@% you! I miss him terribly.

A great interview with such an accomplished musician. Very few people today sound as intelligent today as this man. A great loss to the entertainment industry.

Thank-you for your site;it is very good. Zappa was an opinionated old bugger but intelligent with it. Good old Mary Travers too.

Thanks for that perfect recording of a fine interview with that great free thinker and composer that was Frank Zappa. It's so good to hear someone that is not high on dope or trapped in some ideology..and that is so down on earth and so dedicated to music.

Zappa is/was and always will be absolute genius! This interview (the day before my birth) is well worth the listen. Frank is intelligent, relevant, entertaining and informative.

EXCELLENT! what a great interview---and i don't think frank was at all rude to mary travers, as a matter of fact, i thought he was pretty polite. when he said,"well, let me get out of here", i don't really believe he was upset, he was done--off to the next bit of business. thanks so much for making this available!
