About

Focus

Focus was a rock band from Amsterdam often credited as one of the first bands to bring instrumental progressive rock to the AM airwaves with 1971 hit "Hocus Pocus." The band's music was heavily classics- and jazz-influenced, fusing hard-driving instrumental flash-rock with vocals as an instrument. Moving Waves featured "Hocus Pocus" and offered plenty of sidelong tracks and extended solos, and later albums like Live at the Rainbow and Hamburger Concerto showcased the group's classical and jazz influences. On Mother Focus and Ship of Memories, Focus took a more commercial approach with shorter cuts and more pop-oriented material. Focus disbanded in the late '70s, although the original lineup reunited in 1990 for a Dutch television special.
