Concert Summary

After establishing herself as the female vocalist in country-rock pioneer Gram Parson's Fallen Angels band, Emmylou Harris was devastated by his death in 1973 and left at a musical crossroads. With the help of Linda Ronstadt, who deeply admired Harris, she relocated to Los Angeles and soon signed with Warner Brothers. One of the conditions of her 1974 recording contract was that she was required to "get a hot band" together. Harris wasted no time…entire summary

Emmylou is a national treasure! Her voice, her songs, her humour, her sense of humility, make one wonder how we are so blessed at her presence and contributions to the music industry. Having seen her live many times and appreciating her recordings, I can say that the Hot Band era ranks up with my favorite periods of her music career. We love you Emmylous!

This is simply an outstanding example of Emmy and Hots early stuff she was /is one of the most underated entertainers of her era example jokes and not just directing but cheerleading for her band and what a band her assitant helper in putting this band together was a former fallen Angel with Gram by the name of Vern Gosdin(Look it up on this weeks Wolfgang Vault)Her surounding Cast seems to get the much deserved respect However lest we forget She stepped up and fronted this great group of players and at a time when the Good ole boys in Nashville were looking for the man to bring REAL COUNTRY MUSIC back to the minions It turned out to be a WOMAN!! I saw her open for Willie Nelson twice @ The Charleston (WV) Civic Center Back when they would actually book real concerts at the C C C, She would always sing w/Willie on a couple of songs specificly Angel flying to close to the ground, Till I can gain control again, I still remember thinking how she kept the focus on the music although she was stunningly good lookin Long brown hair jeans and boots, She would take a drink talk about"Raisin Hell" and kick off Tonight the Bottle let me down, I watched alot of acts come and go and they tried but never came close Country Music likes to hand out titles ex King of Country,Queen, Mother ofthis or that When it comes to EMMY LOU HARRIS the only fitting title is SAVIOR of Country music because it was dead in the water folks when she came along they all started going back to tradition and recognising those who never left THANKS WOLFGANG I CAN ALWAYS find my fix right here from Led Zep 4, to Kristoferson to EMMY LOU HARRIS the modern day Saint and Savior of Country Music,- Rob

My Mother,Father, and Uncle are Emmylou fanatics,so I've heard just about everything she's done, and this is by far my favorite! The counrtry guitar acts of today,Brad Paisley,Keith Urban, and even Alan Jackson's band, have The Hot Band to thank for their "new" sound!!Come on now, James Burton,Albert Lee,Vince Gill,Ricky Skaggs, and let us not forget Rodney Crowell,Hank DeVito, and Emory Gordy! They were all a continuance of Gram's vision that country artists today, set aside a very few, have so sady lost sight of!Thanx to a few young artists who are rebelling against the Nashville corporate thugs, like Scott H Biram,Hank III,Cross Canadian Ragweed, still kickin'& spittin today Lucinda Williams, and a few more, hopefully we'll hear real country music on the radio, and,God forbid, the CMA's,ACM's,and the Grammys! So,I whole heartedly say thank you to Emmylou & The Hot Band for showin' the snot nosed brats, like me and many more, how it's supposed to be done, and to the new up and comers who are fighting tooth and nail to bring it all back home!I hope to,someday real soon, hear the words "Are You Ready For The Country",and then when everyone yells "Hell yeah",we really hear the country! One can only dream, right?Anyway, this show is a prime example of how country music should sound, and be played!I believe that concludes my review/rant,and I woud once again like to extend my deepest thanks to Wolfgang's Vault for allowing us to enjoy all of this great music for free, and allowing space for the opinions of the listeners! As a great man once sang,"let there be songs to fill the air"!!!!!!!!! -Peace & Love-

Sadly missing: Emmylou's exquisite covers of Gram's classics, eg, Sin City and Wheels. Otherwise, I'll go with johnnyp's assessment. This was back in the day when Rolling Stone would give it's lead record review a full page rave and it actually mean a great deal as was the case with Pieces of the Sky, which I bought just on the strength of that review. Break my heart. Couldn't get all my LP collection on CD, but this and Elite Hotel are essential.
