Concert Summary

This show was recorded on ELP's legendary Works tour, which began with a 65-piece orchestra and choir that the group took on the road. Arguably one of the biggest undertakings in rock history, after three weeks of performing to great reviews the band had to drop the massive entourage; even with most of the shows selling out, the enterprise had already cost the band $4 million. In the end, it was decided they would carry on with their usual three-piece format, and the remaining three weeks of the U.S./Canada tour featured this lineup.

There are plenty of live ELP albums…entire summary

I saw ELP about 10 years ago, which I'm pretty sure was their last bonafide tour. I doubt we'll ever see a real "Reunion" tour because even 10 years ago, Greg's glorious voice was pretty much completely shot I'm afraid. Actually it was a doubly depressing night as Jethro Tull was on the same bill and Ian Anderson's voice was basically gone as well. Very sad as I was a MAJOR fan of both bands.

Saw ELP at the RPI Fieldhouse in Troy NY, on Feb 06, 1978, on a night of a driving snowstorm. What a great show!! I remember the crowd roaring as Keith's big modular system opened up just before the start, as if being hatched!. Carl's drum solo......I'll never forget, and Greg's song for his young daughter are the great memories I have..

My first exposure to ELP was when a friend of mine, Scotty Migone, brought the Brain Salad Surgery album with him to our 9th grade guitar class way back in the 1970's. Right after that I went out and bought the Works (black album cover) double LP. The only 2 songs I liked on that was "Pirates", and "Fanfare For The Common Man." I also had learned to play "From The Beginning" on guitar. Now it's like nigh impossible to get any copy of Pirates with the live orchestra. Dudes, if you're reading this, and you need some backup on guitar, I'll Play With Ya. Dave.

My first time for ELP was the Arena annex St Louis Mo. Tarkus tour. The annex is the inside parking garage where the St Louis Blues Hockey team parked their cars. They had gray wrestling mats on the floor that we sat on. Opening act Wishbone Ash. I have loved ELP ever since that night. Have seen them about 5 times. Keith Emerson is a little guy...like 5' 5" . He once was playing his take into the crowd moog thingy....right next to me. Carl Palmer might be the best drummer I have ever seen. Its fun to relive the olden days!

My first time seeing ELP was during their "Trilogy Tour", I had heard Lucky man, but that was it. I really had no idea what I was in for at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, N.J. in 1973? Not sure of the date. I was sitting on the floor about 17 rows back in front of Keith Emerson. I was "Blown Away" and I was a Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin fan. It was a night I'll never forget, because they changed me into a progressive rock lover. I saw ELP once again in Philly's Spectrum when they toured the "Works" album. Fanfare and Pirates where the best new songs of this time period. Tarkus is my favorite album and song. Brain Salad Surgery is the finest masterpiece of Progressive rock music, that paved the way for many bands, like Rush, Kansas and today's Dream Theater. It sad to see breakups within great bands like ELP, because of who they are and what they acheived in such a few years. I hope ELP will do a true reunion tour doing the best material they have written, before its too late. Awesome vocals and guitar of Greg Lake to the best Progressive/jazz drummer for decades-Carl Palmer. Welcome my friends...Emerson,Lake & Palmer!!

Yea, bterry has it right. Keith did fall in the Lake as we called it. Lot's of things went on in the Lake. Every time we did a gig there as it was hot for the sound checks we went in after. Really had fun with the Dead crew and the chicks we could grab at the time.

I was in the USAF, stationed in the UK, early 70's. Wife & I went to see ELP at Wembley arena to see the Welcome Back My Friends tour. We went the 1st night and were so blown away we wen the second night. Im my humble opinion, Karn Evil 9 experienced in full quadrophonic sound, live has to be experienced to be believed. Absolutly the best Progressive rock band ever recorded, Welcome Back, best live album ever. I feel so fortunate to have seen them at the peak of their creativity.

I was fortunate to see ELP with the full orchestra at MSG, NYC back in 1977. It was the WNEW-FM's concert that they did every year near the holidays. I remember them opening to Abaddons Bolero, and how the orchestra walked out on stage one by one all wearing white ELP T-shirts. That was the 1st time saw them. I had tickets for the Roosevelt Stadium show a few yrs prior that was postponed due to bad weather but I couldnt go on the rescheduled day. (I was too young to drive & No one could take me) I have been a fan since the their 1st LP. I still marvel at Keith Emersons ability to play the way he did, & Carl Palmers drumming. I saw them one more time at Princeton College,, probably around 1979 I think. I didnt see the reunion tour in the mid 90's.. I kind of wish I did now. Tarkus & Brain Salad Surgery are probably my 2 favorites out of all.
