Concert Summary

In terms of inspired creativity and groundbreaking technology, Emerson, Lake and Palmer will always be remembered for their first four studio albums, which far and away surpassed the commercial success of any other progressive rock act of the 1970s. One of the first so called supergroups of the decade, the band consisted of former Nice keyboard virtuoso Keith Emerson, bassist and lead vocalist of the initial King Crimson lineup, Greg Lake, and Atomic Rooster's drummer extraordinaire, Carl Palmer. Collectively the trio created a monstrous high precision sound that incorporated keyboard and…entire summary

Whatever happened to these guys? Did they give it up? I would think that if there was anyone from the prog rock sound that you'd call timeless, it would have been ELP.

I sat 4th row floor stage left (Greg's side) for this one. Didn't have tickets, but went to the "will call" window anyway. They had 3 available, and there happened to be 3 of us. Outstanding show!!!

They certainly pushed the limits at the time. What a group. How about a reunion E.L.P? I mean are you guys doing anything better than this?

I attended this ELP show at the Anaheim Convention Center. It's right across the street from Disneyland and where they have the NAMM show today. We ordered the tickets way in advance directly from the Convention Center and when we got them they were front row seats directly in front of Mr. Emerson! We couldn't believe it. I was 14 years old at the time and an ELP fanatic. There was a girl about 20 that came to me and wanted to sit in my lap because she didn't have a great view. After about 20 minutes I told her to go back to her seat because I wanted to watch the show. I wouldn't have told her that today. Anyway the opening band was a 4 piece group called Back Door and they were and average rock. ELP came on and it was amazing. Keith didn't do the flying spinning piano because of a lack of room, but that was OK since I got to see them at the California Jam. You the band was great on every song since the show was recorded for the live 3 record set that came out a few months later. Carl Palmer was like watching a machine play the drums with perfect timing. Greg was the director of the band with fantastic vocals. What a show!

Not the best drum mix. It seems many of the recordings from this tour have awful mixes.

First time I saw these deranged musical geniuses was this tour at Cobo Arena, Detroit. Terrorized and amazed the crowd! If I'm not mistaken, this was the tour that Carl Palmer used the custom-made drum kit that later collapsed a stage due to its sheer weight. From what I've been able to gather from various sources, Ringo bought the thing out of a warehouse in the U.K. with Carl's blessing.... the damn thing sure looked cool underneath the stage pagoda with its various huge gongs suspended around Carl! Sign of the times - I paid 7 (seven) dollars to see this show!
