Concert Summary

Recorded on the tour promoting his Goodbye Cruel World album, this classic King Biscuit Flower Hour performance shows the musical transition Elvis Costello was going through during the mid-80s. His band, the Attractions, had received a facelift with the addition of Gary Barnacle on sax that brightened up many of the new songs in the show, and Costello himself somehow juggles his trademark new-wave sound with the more sophisticated and complex songs he had begun writing and recording at the time.

EC and the A sound as fresh and snotty as they did when they were first "out!" I think the sound quality is great here, and unlike the same era when George Thorogood decided to drag a saxophonist into the mix, Barnacle holds back when appropriate. (In GT's band, the sax player seemed to advertise, "We have a sax player now!" during every song, in a band supposed to feature a bluesy guitar sound!) I would love to hear more songs by EC from the "Trust" album. It would be oh so sublime to hear a concert from the time of its release, but thanks for this one, W!

Costello covers the Birds "So you want to be a rock and roll star" - and does a great job. The sound is a bit up and down but on some numbers like "Everyday I write the book" it is really excellent. I agree that the sax certainly adds something, filling in the overall sound. Good concert and the band sound like they are enjoying themselves, always a good sign.
