Concert Summary

Guitars are tough. No one will argue that fact. The good ones are made of little more than wood and metal and are designed to make awful noise - screeching, rumbling, wailing, chugging, skronky, angular, awful noise. And it's great. But piano? Aren't those for parlor recitals and dance choreography? Nay! Says Elton John. That bundle of pine and ivory was meant to rock!

In late 1970, Elton John was not yet a household name in the States, nor had he…entire summary

Not at this concert. First time I saw him in concert was the Nassau Coliseum in 1972. Took my then 8 year old daughter to her first concert. Sat in the 8th row. WOW! Since then, have seen him, maybe 6 times, twice with Billy Joel. Speaking of Leon Russel, first time I saw him was at Fillmore East with Joe Cocker (Mad Dog and Englishmen). UNREAL!

I saw Elton at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernadino. Leon Russell was the other act. What I remember is Leon opening and Elton closing. I'm thinking it must have been the next tour, but maybe not. I'm sure one of you must know the answer to that one. The remastering of this concert is fantastic. I'm grateful to get to hear this still raw and full throttle show for free. Thanks An overlooked and fantastic Elton album is the live one (1987) with the symphony in Australia.

An earlier comment suggested that Elton John must have blown away the Kinks. I have a vague memory of the show. It was my second (the first was a performance of Gary Lewis and the Playboys, the Vegetables, the Detergents, and the protopsychedelic Mojo Men to which my father had to take my sister and me after the parents turned down to see ... the Beatles at Candlestick). I was in the ninth grade, and went on my own to see the Kinks. My recollection of Elton John matches the tape: it was a great set. He danced like a madman against the keys, and we heard a young, spare rock'n'roller. But the Kinks were awesome too. Louder, with a tight show. Was this in support of Lola? ... I don't remember, but I do remember really liking both acts. As well as the apples that Bill handed out at the door afterwards.
