Poster Art Q & A

Description

FME005 was David Byrd's first concert poster for Bill Graham. The 28 year-old artist admitted he was "flying blind," and the design was his interpretation of "... what they were doing in San Francisco." A MFA graduate, Byrd demonstrated his command of perspective in this drawing, and he later said his study of symmetry led him to Art Noveau and his LSD experiences enhanced his vision. Bill Graham liked Byrd's work because he could read it.

The postcard was only printed once before the concert. Two different stocks were used in the print run, one glossy and coated and the other plain and uncoated. It measures 4 3/8" x 6 3/4".

Promoters often created postcard versions of many of their concert posters and used them as promotional mailings. The postcards in Wolfgang's Vault are unique, small-format pieces of art that make a fascinating addition to any collection.
