Poster Art Q & A

Description

Who could turn a potential catastrophe into a golden opportunity? Bill Graham and The Who, that's who. On this night, the grocery store across the street was firebombed, and smoke poured into the concert hall. Fans of The Who thought it was part of the 'Tommy' show and loved it, but City fire marshals took another approach: they rushed the theatre to evacuate the hall. When one of the marshals jumped the stage, Peter Townshend took him for a berserk fan and kicked him, as in literally, off. In the end, the Fillmore was evacuated without incident, Townshend and Roger Daltry barely escaped being charged on the kicking issue, the second show was cancelled and Bill Graham refunded the ticket money. The Who, however, agreed to return to the Fillmore East at the end of their U.S. tour and that concert, The Triumphant Return of The Who, really broke them.

Much like theatrical playbills, programs have been used at concerts since the 1900s. With information on bands and their members, it gives the concertgoer a chance to get to know the musicians they have paid money to see. The Vault's exceptional collection of programs range over four decades from venues around the world.
