Poster Art Q & A

Description

This handbill was reprinted for the Bill Graham Presents' employees on the company's 25th Anniversary in 1990.

Bill Graham said that the first benefit for the San Francisco Mime Troupe was by far the most significant evening of his life in theater. Thrown to raise money for the Troupe after Ronnie Davis was arrested for performing in the park without a permit, the Benefit brought together a mixed group of musicians, theatre buffs, political liberals, and passionate folks looking for something hip and happening. The "Appeal Party" was more than a smash hit; it launched Graham's career as a concert promoter and gave birth to a new, progressive scene in San Francisco. Thousands of people showed up at the loft that only held a couple hundred, and the marijuana that was present foreshadowed the impending psychedelic movement. Everyone was dancing, hopeful and cohesive. Bill Graham's first concert was a life-changing success.

Concert promoters created handbill versions of many of their posters and used them as sidewalk handouts and dashboard fliers to promote upcoming shows. Many of the handbills are double-sided, with poster art on one side and a calendar of upcoming shows on the other. These handbills represent an important element of rock concert history because they were hands-on marketing tools that united promoter and patron.
