Poster Art Q & A

Description

The original name of Bill Graham's East Coast concert hall, the Village Theatre, was abandoned when he discovered that a previous theatre owner retained ownership of the name. By the time Richie Havens and British Invasion band, The Troggs, appeared for the venue's third show, the name had been changed to its new moniker.

The 1st printing postcard was printed before the concert in two different variants.

1st printing A (see FME001-A) is a vibrant pink, orange and green design by artist Jimms Nelson. It was printed before the concert and measures 4 1/8" x 7".

1st printing B is a black and white design featuring a photograph of Richie Havens. A "#1" is in the lower left edge of the image. It measures 4" x 7" and was printed before the concert, presumably because the A variety is difficult to read.

Promoters often created postcard versions of many of their concert posters and used them as promotional mailings. The postcards in Wolfgang's Vault are unique, small-format pieces of art that make a fascinating addition to any collection.
