Poster Art Q & A

Description

Otis Redding was poised to wrap both arms around mainstream rock in 1967. He'd just finished recording "(Sitting On) The Dock of the Bay" in September and was busy doing short tours introducing his honey-gravel growl to soon-to-be-fans. Family Dog, Denver was on his itinerary for late December and was getting ready for the breakthrough man with a stunning Bob Fried poster in bold colors and intricate design when, on December 10, the world got the awful news that Redding and four members of the Bar Kays were killed in an airplane crash on their way to a Wisconsin gig. The Family Dog pulled the poster and didn't fill Redding's dates, although another concert did go on the 21st and the Doors performed December 29-31. Redding's death was mourned in many ways, one of the most fitting being Jim Morrison's red-rose tribute at the December 26 Winterland concert for which Redding was to have been the top billing.

FDD016 was never printed as a poster, and Fried's design remained part of the Family Dog, Denver inventory, changing hands several times over the years in various business transactions. Two years ago, Phil Cushway discovered a set of films in his archives that turned out to be Fried's original design for the Redding concert and, in a painstaking, months-long process, reconstructed the poster. With no finished poster to use as a reference, he culled period examples of Fried's work and consulted experts to help with appropriate color choices. Now, FDD016 has been printed for the first time ever in an extremely limited run of 35 numbered proofs. These proofs have the distinction of commemorating an event that didn't happen by an artist who's no longer with us and are precious for both their beauty and the bittersweet 'what if' they force one to contemplate.

Before production printing of posters can commence, printers' proofs are made and used to consider minor adjustments or alterations in the work before the production run is approved. Wolfgang's Vault contains a unique collection of original printers' proofs, untrimmed and with registration marks included, printed on fine quality proof stock.
