Poster Art Q & A

Description

The Fillmore East audience was in for a surprise when Miles Davis opened for the Steve Miller Band and Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Although Davis introduced his electric side with In a Silent Way in 1969, this concert dug deeper. The gig, performed by the Quintet of Davis, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack Delohnette, was both the first of the Quintet's electric gigs and one of the band's last performances. The hard-driving jazz was recognizable but loaded with polyrhythms, pumped-up harmonies and arpeggio solos and included Corea-Davis duels in driving tempos. The audience might not have been prepared for the fare; stunned might describe their response, but the night was historic for Davis aficionados. Luckily for all concerned, the March 7th show was recorded live: just four nights later, the dazzle of this Davis combo was diminished when Shorter left to collaborate with Joe Zawinul and form Weather Report.

Much like theatrical playbills, programs have been used at concerts since the 1900s. With information on bands and their members, it gives the concertgoer a chance to get to know the musicians they have paid money to see. The Vault's exceptional collection of programs range over four decades from venues around the world.
