Description

The Fillmore East was in count-down mode; barely three weeks remained until what Bill Graham had announced in April, 1971 would be his hallowed hall's final rock concert. Frank Zappa was lined up for June 5/6 and set-up with an equipment truck to record Fillmore East: June 1971. The day before the concert, John Lennon and Yoko Ono showed up at Zappa's hotel room and, after pleasantries and gentle put-downs were exchanged, took up Zappa's invitation to "come down and jam" with the band. Lennon and Yoko made a surprise, on-stage appearance with Zappa for the encore of the June 5th concert, too, creating a died-and-gone-to-heaven sensation in awe-struck fans privy to the three's scream-edition of "Scumbag."

The jam session, the tapes to which Zappa and Lennon shared access, ended up irritating Zappa's prince-of-peace persona because Lennon, according to Zappa, assumed credit for a Zappa number, "King Kong," re-named "Jam Rag" by Lennon. The jam product was not included in Zappa's Fillmore East: June 1971 but did appear on Lennon's 1972 album, Somewhere in New York City. Zappa held off on the material until 1992 when he included it in his devoted-fans compilation, Playground Psychotics.
