Poster Art Q & A

Description

Jimi Hendrix and the Flying Eyeball are images indelibly linked in the psychedelic poster art of the late Rick Griffin. Griffin discovered The Eyeball, in a much more benign form, in the 1950s auto detailing art of California pinstriper Von Dutch and reworked it over time to become the winged, bloodshot figure parting a ring of fire with serpent-like tentacles. The highlighted lettering, vivid color, and complicated imagery reflect Griffin's attention to precise details and the influence of Indian lore and archeology on his work. The Eyeball became associated exclusively with Hendrix's music in future billings and recordings of his performances.

The 1st printing postcard was produced before the concert. The red color varies throughout the run. "105" is positioned above the "T" in "Tickets", and it measures 4 1/2" x 7 1/16".

There were also some pre-concert double-sized mailers printed that were conjoined with the BG106 image. They measure 4 1/2" x 14 1/16".

Promoters often created postcard versions of many of their concert posters and used them as promotional mailings. The postcards in Wolfgang's Vault are unique, small-format pieces of art that make a fascinating addition to any collection.
