Poster Art Q & A

Description

This vibrant poster was created for the Jimi Hendrix Experience's 1969 tour of the US by David Byrd, Bill Graham's exclusive poster artist for the Fillmore East. Touring on the momentum from their ascending success in Europe, the trio quickly became known across the States for their incendiary live shows and Hendrix's sexual charisma. This poster exemplifies the Experience's fondness for psychedelic fashion and the hippie movement, and was used specifically to promote shows at a number of US venues. A year later, the Experience, comprised of Hendrix, Noel Redding, and Mitch Mitchell, broke up.

Concert promoters created handbill versions of many of their posters and used them as sidewalk handouts and dashboard fliers to promote upcoming shows. Many of the handbills are double-sided, with poster art on one side and a calendar of upcoming shows on the other. These handbills represent an important element of rock concert history because they were hands-on marketing tools that united promoter and patron.
