Description

The Human Be-In was a "happening" in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park (January 14, 1967) – a "Gathering of the Tribes" focusing on the key ideas of the 1960s counterculture: personal empowerment, cultural and political decentralization, communal living, ecological awareness, and higher consciousness (often achieved with the aid of psychedelic drugs). The occasion opposed the new California law banning the use of the psychedelic drug, LSD.

Speakers at the rally included Timothy Leary who set the tone with his famous phrase "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out", Beat poets Alan Ginsberg and Gary Snyder, and social activist Jerry Rubin. Hells Angels corralled lost children, Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead played and "underground chemist" Owsley Stanley provided massive amounts of his "White Lightning" LSD, specially produced for the event.
