Poster Art Q & A

Description

In the summer of 1967, Bill Graham took two of his San Francisco favorites to the 'Great White North' for 'The San Francisco Scene in Toronto.' The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane played eight performances at Toronto's O'Keefe Center, a cultural mecca and home of the ballet and opera, where the fans were literally rocked out of their seats and onto the stage at the first night's performance and treated to an informal jam session on the last night. Highlights put on a totally outstanding light show for the duration of the gig, complete with dripping peace symbol and pulsating colors, and the real draw was Grace Slick and the Airplane since the Dead were still considered 'mild party hippies' by the some of the Toronto crowd. Toronto was a different place after the Scene departed, and it was hard to determine who was the happiest; the fans for having been there or the O'Keefe's ushers as they waved goodbye after the last performance. BG074 is among the rarest of posters. There are hard to verify stories that the original cache of posters was confiscated at the Canadian border by border patrol, but whether the posters were seized or simply put away by contented Canadians, this summer concert made a big impression.

The 1st printing poster was printed before the concert on two different kinds of paper, one a thick poster board and the other a thin regular stock version. This original printing measures 13 15/16" x 20 7/16".

The 2nd printing is on smooth opaque cover stock and has a Wolfgang's Vault notation in the lower right hand margin (not our watermark as seen in the image). It was printed in 2006 by the Bill Graham Archives LLC in a 1000 copy run. This reprint measures 15 3/8" x 22 3/8".

The 3rd printing is on glossy cover stock and also bears a Wolfgang's Vault notation in the lower right hand margin (not our watermark as seen in the image). It was printed in 2006 by the Bill Graham Archives LLC in a 1000 copy run and is larger than the other printings, measuring 22 3/8" x 32 1/2".

Wolfgang's Vault owns one of the world's largest collections of original concert posters, featuring hundreds of rock posters, political posters, sports posters, comedy posters and others that were previously unavailable to the general public. Virtually all of our concert posters are in mint condition, and many are signed by the headline performer or the graphic artist.
