Poster Art Q & A

Description

BG042 documents Grace Slick's move from Great Society to rival band, the Jefferson Airplane. Featured here with Chicago bluesman Junior Wells, Slick joined the Airplane in time for their release, "Surrealistic Pillow" and brought with her two songs,"White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love." The lettering on Wilson's poster is becoming denser, a style that the artist assured a skeptical Bill Graham would make "...people stop and look at it."

The postcard was printed after the concert with the 2nd printing of the poster. It displays the same bright purple color and the same chocolate brown dates and measures 4 1/2" x 7 1/2".

Promoters often created postcard versions of many of their concert posters and used them as promotional mailings. The postcards in Wolfgang's Vault are unique, small-format pieces of art that make a fascinating addition to any collection.
