Poster Art Q & A

Description

In the summer of 1967, Bill Graham took two of his San Francisco favorites to the 'Great White North' for 'The San Francisco Scene in Toronto.' The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane played eight performances at Toronto's O'Keefe Center, a cultural mecca and home of the ballet and opera, where the fans were literally rocked out of their seats and onto the stage at the first night's performance and treated to an informal jam session on the last night. Highlights put on a totally outstanding light show for the duration of the gig, complete with dripping peace symbol and pulsating colors, and the real draw was Grace Slick and the Airplane since the Dead were still considered 'mild party hippies' by the some of the Toronto crowd. Toronto was a different place after the Scene departed, and it was hard to determine who was the happiest; the fans for having been there or the O'Keefe's ushers as they waved goodbye after the last performance. BG074 is among the rarest of posters. There are hard to verify stories that the original cache of posters was confiscated at the Canadian border by border patrol, but whether the posters were seized or simply put away by contented Canadians, this summer concert made a big impression.

The handbill was printed once before the concert. It is backed with a Time Magazine review and measures 4 3/4" x 7".

Concert promoters created handbill versions of many of their posters and used them as sidewalk handouts and dashboard fliers to promote upcoming shows. Many of the handbills are double-sided, with poster art on one side and a calendar of upcoming shows on the other. These handbills represent an important element of rock concert history because they were hands-on marketing tools that united promoter and patron.
