Poster Art Q & A

Description

The Grateful Dead headlined Big Mama Mae Thornton's second appearance at the Fillmore. Balance is the message in this poster; just as the playing card visage could be folded to form an almost perfectly symmetrical Rorschach blot, Big Mama balanced the Dead.

The 1st printing of the postcard pre-dates the concert and has a "West Coast Lithograph" credit on its reverse. It measures 4 5/8" x 7 3/4".

The 2nd printing has a "Creative Lithograph" credit on its reverse, and displays a lighter purple face. It measures 4 7/8" x 8" and was printed after the concert.

Promoters often created postcard versions of many of their concert posters and used them as promotional mailings. The postcards in Wolfgang's Vault are unique, small-format pieces of art that make a fascinating addition to any collection.
