Poster Art Q & A

Description

These classic Detroit rock shows, ranging from June 7th – 9th of 1968, were the last time Cream played the Grande Ballroom. With over 2,000 attendees rocking out in 100 degree heat, the MC5 got the waning crowd riled up by announcing their plan to disintegrate an American flag. Needless to say, the Detroit audience was worked up into a frenzy by the time power-trio Cream took to the stage. Like the majority of Grande posters, Gary Grimshaw did the artwork for the poster, which incorporates a Cream promo photo surrounded by psychedelic paisleys. This is a classic Grande poster that documents the power-trio at a legendary show shortly before they disbanded.

The 1st printing postcard is on porous stock like that of the original poster. There is some color variation throughout the print run. It was printed before the concert and measures 4 3/16" x 7 1/8".

The 2nd printing postcard was reprinted in 2005 with the 2nd printing poster. It is on glossy stock and is smaller than the original postcard, measuring 3 5/8" x 5 3/8".

Promoters often created postcard versions of many of their concert posters and used them as promotional mailings. The postcards in Wolfgang's Vault are unique, small-format pieces of art that make a fascinating addition to any collection.
