Poster Art Q & A

Description

In the world of psychedelic poster art, Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley reigned supreme through the hallowed early age of concert posters. To celebrate the coming of Roky Erickson's 13th Floor Elevators to the stage of the Family Dog's Avalon Ballroom, the famed poster duo designed this bright and surrealistic artwork to accompany the event. In September of '66, the Elevators were well on their way to becoming an underground cult favorite, and remain today a musical institution that's influenced a legion of young bands looking to emulate their psychedelic garage rock stylings. With an opening set by their Texas brethren the Sir Douglas Quintet, this show was a powerhouse of eccentric '60s rock 'n' roll.

All four variations of the handbill were printed before the concert.

1st printing A is 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" in hot pink with a dot screen background, white border and I.D. Magazine page on the reverse.

1st printing B is 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" in dark hot pink with a dot screen background, white border and I.D. Magazine page on reverse.

1st printing C (see FD024-C) is 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" in dark hot pink with a white background and border and blank reverse.

1st printing D is 8 1/4" x 12" in red ink with no dot screen on coarse, salmon/orange colored paper.

Concert promoters created handbill versions of many of their posters and used them as sidewalk handouts and dashboard fliers to promote upcoming shows. Many of the handbills are double-sided, with poster art on one side and a calendar of upcoming shows on the other. These handbills represent an important element of rock concert history because they were hands-on marketing tools that united promoter and patron.
